Introduction to Murrine

April 24, 25, 26

For over three thousand years, glass artists have been incorporating murrine, "picture cane" into their work. Working from inside out artists create an image within a cane. The cane is created hot on the torch and stretched. After annealing, the cane is sliced open with a saw and the image is revealed. In this way you can get intricate details in a miniature image. The finished cane produces many slices of the same image. The slices can be incorporated into beads, pendants, marbles, paperweights; set like stones into jewelry settings; or inlayed into wood. You will learn the basic murrine techniques while making letters and numbers, flowers, “millifiore,” and a basic face. Bring your designs and learn how to make them into a repeated two-dimensional image. *One year lamp-working experience required. $420

All three day workshops taught at Studio 9990 in Fairplay, Colorado. Lodging arrangements available upon request. Tuition for each class includes all materials necessary for completion of class projects and lunch for each day. Work at you own pace. You will have access to the studio from 8:00 am until midnight so if you need a break to take a hike, snow shoe, or otherwise play it's no big deal. Demos at 10:00 am, 2:00 pm, and after dinner with open studios and open instruction in between. If you are into alpine sports arrange to spend a day before or after the class on one of the world class ski resorts just a 1/2 hour drive over the pass. Discounted ski passes can be obtained through the studio and Brett would be glad to take you to the best snow available. Maximum class size is 5.
